How to Get a Business Degree
You do not necessarily have to have a business degree to enter this field, but it will definitely help move your resume to the top of the pile. If your plan is to climb the corporate ladder, a business degree will be even more important because it will be extremely difficult to enter a leadership position without it. High school graduates can begin their business educations right away with an associate’s degree.
The Associate of Applied Science in Business Administration
The first business degree program is the Associate of Applied Science in Business Administration. You can find schools that offer this degree by consulting the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs or ACBSP. Choose the school that offers your desired specialization and then apply to enter the program.
In most cases, you will be required to complete 90 credits to earn your degree. These courses include management, finance, marketing and microeconomics. Receive your degree upon completion of the program. Your new associate’s degree will qualify you for jobs with small companies as managers or assistant managers.
The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration
The business field is highly competitive, so some people opt to obtain more education by earning their bachelor’s degrees. You can start by consulting the ACBSP for schools that offer the bachelor’s program of your choice. This program requires that you complete 180 credits of coursework. Along with the courses listed above for the associate’s degree, you will also have the opportunity to focus on a particular area in business. Some examples are investment, marketing, human resources and financial analysis. After you receive your degree, you can apply for jobs in management with the government, small and large companies, retail stores and education.
The Master of Business Administration
The most highly coveted degree in business administration is the Master of Business Administration or MBA. It is an extremely competitive program, so those who have at least two years of experience working in the business world are more likely to be accepted than those who do not. You may be required to pass the Graduate Assessment Management Test or GMAT before you can apply.
Once accepted, complete core courses in Strategic Human Resource Management, Financial Management, Ethics in Business and Society and Business Analytics. You can also choose a specialization, such as Health Care Management or Information Technology. Upon graduation, you will be prepared to enter into leadership positions with global corporations.
