Government Accredited Online Colleges in Maine

Over the last five years, Maine has seen great success improving vocational advancement and the accessibility of online degree programs. For example, the University of Maine operates University College, offering several courses and programs via the seven universities in the system. In addition to these opportunities are physical learning hubs, such as the University College Center, which is also a part of the University of Maine, offering a connection to a real university experience while off-campus. These are meant to be a casual learning place to give students the ability to experience a campus even as an online student.

In addition to this, there are other programs like the Maine Online Learning Initiative available. This one first started back in 2009 and is currently backed by Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Colorado and Maine. This initiative is meant to offer professionals access to tools that allow them to train and become certified remotely through a number of online university systems, improving professional development.

Because learning has become much more easily accessible on these levels, it has become a bit easier to afford tuition. Only four states had a decrease in tuition between the years of 2009 and 2010 and the years of 2014 and 2015, Maine being one of them. However, the education cost is still a bit higher in Maine than it is in other states.

Enrollment rates increased 12 percent from 2002 through 2012, though they've been consistently lower than average. Two year colleges, on the other hand, exploded in attendance; since 2000, enrollment at a two year college in Maine increased 135.7 percent.
